The Hollywood Hookup

by Christy Swift
February 10, 2026 · Forever
Contemporary Romance

I listened to Hollywood Hookup on a recent plane ride, and while the tone of the narrative wasn’t really for me, I can say that the structure of the book lends itself really well to audio.

Josie Days is a makeup artist on a hit musical sci-fi show starring five hot guys who are sequel fodder. They’re doing a charity celebrity date contest with said five guys and for hand-wavy reasons Josie gets roped in to replace a last minute drop out. She winds up winning a date with Sean O’Sullivan, which she does not want.

Josie used to be a child actor under a different name until her career came to a catastrophic end during an incident that involved puppet immolation. She’s been hiding ever since and dating Sean will put her back in the public eye. Sean really wants to date Josie though because she seems uninterested in him and HOW DARE.

This book didn’t work for me very well because it’s really a mad-cap, wacky sort of comedy. The situations the characters find themselves in are very over the top and sometimes felt like they would have worked better for visual comedy versus something on the page. For example, the heroine shows up to a date with the hero in full space alien FX makeup in order not to be recognized…which might have been funnier if we had seen her unexpectedly appear in costume versus reading about it.

If a reader doesn’t mind zany shenanigans, the book does work really well in audio and it’s closed door, which I know some readers are searching for. There are two narrators for the audio book (male and female), and some sections are transcripts of podcasts and talk shows, so that makes for a lot of varying voice acting opportunities. It’s definitely fun to listen to.

Hollywood Hookup was just okay for me, but I can see it having more mileage with others.

Emma Tenayuca was a labor organizer in Texas who is best known for leading a strike of pecan shellers in 1938. Workers called her “La Pasionaria“ which means “Passionflower.” From a young age, she survived violence and imprisonment in her quest to help workers get better working conditions and higher wages.

Tenayuca was born on December 21, 1916, and I know all of you December birthday people will identify with her plight – born too close to Christmas, she never got ‘birthday’ presents. Her family was Mexican American, and had lived in Texas for many generations. She was raised by grandparents who were interested in politics, and was also influenced by the speakers in the San Antonio town square. She was brought up with pride in her family and their roots, and she was encouraged to be educated and politically active by her family.

Tenayuca was arrested for the first time at 16, for protesting alongside striking workers from the Finck Cigar Company. She used her bilingual language skills to help people with their problems and worked with many organizations working towards better pay and better conditions for Mexican-Americans.

One of the most common positions for Mexican-American women in the area was in the pecan industry. Pecan shelling for 6-7 cents a pound was difficult work (the meat of the shell must remain intact) for little pay. Additionally, the process filled the factory rooms with a fine dust that contributed towards tuberculosis.

black and white photo shows Emma in the center of a crowd of men. She is wearing a hat and a coat and is holding a white paper and pen in her hand. It appears she is telling them something as they are all looking to her, and she is the center of their attention and the photograph

In 1938, the factories cut pay to 3 cents a pound and Tenayuca, who was 21 years old at the time, found herself leading a strike of approximately 12,000 workers. The strike faced violent opposition, as detailed in the article “Remembering Emma Tenayuca:”

When Pecan production ground to a halt, the owners fought back: Tenayuca and hundreds of strikers were gassed and arrested by San Antonio police. Some were beaten as well. With the NWA rallying community support, the strike turned into a city-wide uprising of the poorest and most oppressed people in San Antonio.

Thirty-seven days after the strike began the pecan producers agreed to arbitration. A few weeks later, the workers had won a wage increase to seven or eight cents per pound.

Tenayuca faced opposition as a woman, as a Mexican-American, as a labor organizer, and as a member of the Communist Party (she left the Party in 1946). From Americans Who Tell the Truth:

In 1939, as Emma was giving a speech, an enraged mob attacked San Antonio’s Municipal Auditorium. Fearing that she would be lynched, Emma was led away through a secret passageway. The mob threw bricks, broke windows, set fires, ripped out auditorium seats, and later that night, together with the Ku Klux Klan, burned the city’s mayor in effigy for having defended Emma’s right to free speech. This event is still on record as San Antonio’s largest riot.

Tenayuca married another labor organizer, but it didn’t last (they divorced in the 1940s). Blacklisted throughout Texas, she left for San Francisco to attend college. She had a son in 1952, and worked as a teacher and returned to San Antonio to teach in the 1960s.

black and white photo of people standing arm in arm, Emma Tenayuca is center wearing a white suit. The two women on either side of her are wearing dresses that render grey in the photo, so Emma stands out. They are all smiling broadly
A 1939 photo with Tenayuca at the center

She never stopped working for women’s rights and worker rights. In 1942 she led a demonstration against the U.S. Border Patrol, which was beating migrants and leaving them to die in the desert. In 1944, she organized another rally which brought more attention to the Border Patrol’s brutal practices.

Emma Tenayuca died at the age of 83 of Alzheimer’s Disease. At her funeral, writer Carmen Tafolla said:

La Pasionaria, we called her, because she was our passion, because she was our heart — defendiendo a los pobres, speaking out at a time when neither Mexicans nor women were expected to speak at all.

Seibert Desjarlais are the editors of a new and excellent anthology called Here for All The Reasons: Why We Watch the Bachelor.

The essays inside are incredible, and provide deep and incisive critique of The Bachelor franchise from people who love, or used to love it deeply. Some of the topics blew my mind. I was so excited to talk to Ilana and Stevie about their work, and we happened to record just as the latest season of The Bachelorette was cancelled, so we talk about that as well.

If you like deep examinations of pop culture and of properties typically dismissed as meaningless fluff – hello, yes, I do! – you’ll have fun with us today.

We’re going to talk about conservative fantasy, polyamory, grad school, changing portrayals of masculinity in reality tv, media literacy and so much more.

As I say during our conversation, I think the best critiques of things come from people who are fans.

TW/CW: At about 50 minutes into the interview, we discuss allegations of domestic violence from Taylor Frankie Paul, and at 1 hour and 20 minutes, we discuss the loss of their friend Dr. Katie McWain, to whom the book is dedicated.

Some Dukes Have All the Luck

Some Dukes Have All the Luck by Christina Britton is $1.99! There’s so much catnip in this description that I may pick it up for myself. It’s book one in the Synneful Spinsters, which judging by the title, could be a spin-off from Britton’s Isle of Synne series.

Ash Hawkins, Duke of Buckley, no more wants to marry than he wants a stick in his eye. As the owner of a gaming hell, he is all too aware the odds of a happy marriage are against him. But raising his three rebellious wards alone is proving more than he can handle. He needs to find someone who stands to benefit from a marriage of convenience as much as he does. Someone logical, clinical, and rational. And in a stroke of luck, he quite literally stumbles over just such a woman.

After years of ridicule for being more interested in bugs than boys, Bronwyn has accepted that she’ll never marry for love. Her parents, however, are threatening to find her a husband. Bronwyn doesn’t need any scientific research to show her Ash has secrets. But his proposal would give her the freedom to continue her entomology research and perhaps finally get published. Just as long as she can keep her mind on her work and off his piercing eyes, broad shoulders, and wicked, wicked tongue.

How Sweet It Is

How Sweet It Is by Dylann Newton is $1.99! I believe this was Newton’s debut. It’s an opposites attract romance between a horror writer and a wedding planner. I’ve heard a lot of good things about this one!

Opposites attract in this charming debut romantic comedy, perfect for fans of Beach Read.

Drake Matthews is tired of the spotlight, tired of his reputation as the King of Nightmares. He’s really a nice guy! More than anything, the next book he wants to write is a romance based on his grandparents. But to get that chance, this event has to be successful. And the reticent writer will have to work with the adorably bubbly Kate Sweet.

But just as the two are learning to trust each other, secrets come out that could take down the launch, their relationship, and both their careers. Can Kate find a way to save their jobs and their chance at true love?

The Trouble with Hating You

The Trouble with Hating You by Sajni Patel is $1.99! Sajni Patel gets some really great covers and have been featured in Cover Awe. Have any of you read this one? What’d you think?

A laugh-out-loud romantic comedy debut about first impressions, second chances, and finding the love of your life in the most unexpected way.

Liya Thakkar is a successful biochemical engineer, takeout enthusiast, and happily single woman. The moment she realizes her parents’ latest dinner party is a setup with the man they want her to marry, she’s out the back door in a flash. Imagine her surprise when the same guy shows up at her office a week later — the new lawyer hired to save her struggling company. What’s not surprising: he’s not too thrilled to see her either after that humiliating fiasco.

Jay Shah looks good on paper…and off. Especially if you like that whole gorgeous, charming lawyer-in-a-good-suit thing. He’s also arrogant and infuriating. Lunar Love

Lunar Love by Lauren Kung Jessen is $2.99! Aarya mentioned this one a previous Hide Your Wallet and was tempted by the main characters being enemies in the matchmaking industry.

This sweet, enemies-to-lovers debut rom-com filled with Chinese astrology will undoubtedly prove to be a perfect match with readers of Helen Hoang, Jasmine Guillory, and Helena Hunting.

Always a matchmaker, never a match…

Olivia Huang Christenson is excited-slash-terrified to be taking over her grandmother’s matchmaking business. But when she learns that a new dating app has made her Pó Po’s traditional Chinese zodiac approach all about “animal attraction,” her emotions skew more toward furious-slash-outraged. Especially when L.A.’s most-eligible bachelor Bennett O’Brien is behind the app that could destroy her family’s legacy . . .

Liv knows better than to fall for any guy, let alone an infuriatingly handsome one who believes that traditions are meant to be broken. As the two businesses go head to head, Bennett and Liv make a deal: they’ll find a match for each other—and whoever falls in love loses. But Liv is dealing with someone who’s already adept at stealing business ideas . . . so what’s stopping him from stealing her heart too?

We’re nearing Pride Month, and you know what the means–the queer books will soon be visible, and this month is prepping us very well in a variety of genres.

Score

Score by Kennedy Ryan

Author: Kennedy Ryan
Released: April 19, 2026 by Forever
Genre: , ,
Series: Hollywood Renaissance #2

A scorching second-chance romance between a talented screenwriter and a phenomenal musician from the New York Times bestselling author of Before I Let Go.

“A triumph of art and emotion.” —Talia Hibbert, New York Times bestselling author

You never forget your first love. Isn’t that what they say? Verity Hill knows this truth intimately. She didn’t simply miss Wright “Monk” Bellamy when they parted ways in college. She’s haunted by his touch. Every kiss, any lover since—it’s a shadow of what they had.

Time heals all wounds. Isn’t that what they say? Monk doesn’t believe that for a second. He wasn’t simply betrayed when he and Verity split. He was devastated, with parts of him left behind in the ruins of all that was destroyed.

More than a decade after their disastrous breakup, Verity and Monk must work together on the set of an epic Harlem Renaissance biopic. With Monk, now a world-class musician, creating the score, and Verity, an award-winning screenwriter, penning the script, there’s Oscar buzz before shooting even begins. This once-in-a-lifetime project could catapult them both to new heights, but can they can put the past behind them for the sake of the film … for the sake of something more?

Hard to imagine anyone reading a romance site doesn’t know when Queen Kennedy Ryan’s got a new book coming, but you may not have known that her newest–the second in the Hollywood Renaissance series–stars a bi female lead and features a steamy m/f/f threesome before we even hit chapter three. It’s a hard-won second chance as Verity and Monk find their way back to each other from then, including a diagnosis of bipolar disorder for Verity in between, and because it’s Ryan, you know the story is treated with the respect and care it deserves.

The House of Now and Then

The House of Now and Then by Edward Underhill

Author: Edward Underhill
Released: May 19, 2026 by Avon
Genre: , ,

“The kind of book that feels like home. A brand-new all-time favorite.” — Becky Albertalli, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda and Amelia, If Only

From the author of The In-Between Bookstore , the sweet, unforgettable story of a trans man in his thirties who books a Cape Cod cottage for one lonely summer—only to have its magic bring him visitors from the past and romance where he least expects it, perfect for fans of TJ Klune and Ashley Poston.

Harlowe could use a break. With his academic future over, just like his relationship with his long-term boyfriend Jackson, a suspiciously cheap summer rental on the Cape feels like just the escape he needs.

But when he arrives at the picturesque seaside cottage, he’s alarmed to find his discouraging old professor in the living room. His father making coffee in the kitchen. And a handsome young repairman fixing things in the bedroom. Worst of all, Jackson is in the bathroom. None of them will leave. No one else can see them. And they won’t leave him alone.

The house isn’t magic only for Harlowe, and as the summer grows hot and thick with tourists, old wounds and fresh secrets—both in and outside its walls—begin to transform him. It’s clear the house is trying to tell him something, and he’s sure it has to do with the mysterious repairman who suddenly seems to be everywhere he looks… But can Harlowe let go of the past long enough to listen?

Evoking all the windswept dunes and Fourth of July fireworks of a perfect Cape Cod day, The House of Now and Then asks who you would find, if all your unfinished business was just behind one door.

Underhill’s a fun bit of a chameleon, starting off with queer, trans YA romance, moving through speculative trans fiction with the excellent The In-Between Bookstore (not a romance!), and now offering up an adult cozy trans fantasy billed for fans of TJ Klune and Ashley Poston. Underhill’s work always has something of a healing element, and this literal beach read looks to be the perfect pick for some queer summer joy.

Marooned

Marooned by Ben Chalfin

Author: Ben Chalfin
Released: May 26, 2026 by Rising Action
Genre: , ,

Survivor meets The Charm Offensive in this contemporary LGBTQIA+ romantic comedy about love, strategy, and connection on a desert island reality show.

Ryan Levine is a contestant on the newest season of Marooned, the hit reality show where eighteen people are stranded on a desert island, competing in challenges and voting each other out until one is left to claim the million-dollar prize. All he cares about is bringing home the money, and he’s determined to not let anything stand in his way.

That all changes when he meets Cole Walker, his handsome tribemate with a ready smile and a quick laugh–and, of course, a perfect body. In other words, Cole is a distraction, and that’s the one thing Ryan can’t afford, not when the slightest mistake could get him voted out. Will he be able to navigate the twists and turns of the game and win the million? Or will he go home with nothing but empty pockets and a broken heart?

I’m a huge sucker for reality TV rom-coms (Allison Cochrun’s The Charm Offensive and Elle Everhart’s Hot Summer are two of my all-time favorite queer romances), and this one sounds like extremely my jam, funny and sexy and full of ill-advised yearning, all with an immaculate desert island setting.  I am definitely down for whatever Chalfin is serving up!

Bromantasy

Bromantasy by Máire Roche

Author: Máire Roche
Released: May 26, 2026 by G.P. Putnam's Sons
Genre: , , ,

Two heroes. One brain cell.

BROMANTASY is a cozy, queer fantasy about the mortifying ordeal of being known by your totally platonic best friend and the epic quest that might force you to confront the truth.

Fellas, is it gay to kiss your bff while on a quest through the forest you’re unqualified for?

Juniper O’Reilly is good at only two things: demolishing a pint of mead and finding the perfect skincare routine. Everything else—taking care of the farm, bartering for goods, any sort of manual labor—falls to Juniper’s best friend, the absurdly capable, endlessly patient Mo Elmthorn.

But when Juniper accidentally volunteers them both for a quest to kill a fearsome monster, he knows he’s finally gotten in over his head. Juniper hates camping, he hates the dark, and there’s no way all these foraged mushrooms are going to sit well in his stomach. One thing he doesn’t hate? How good Mo’s thighs look in his questing pants—he doesn’t have time to think about that, though, with a monster to hunt and their futures on the line.

But monsters come in all shapes and sizes. When Juniper and Mo realize that the terrifying beast they’ve sworn to kill is just a scared little girl torn from their family, they’re off to find not only the true villain of the story, but maybe even a happy ending.

“Don’t judge a book by its cover,” they say, but how could I possibly not? That title! That tagline! That art! Everything about this presentation is immaculate, and while “Máire Roche” might be a debut name, Mary E. Roach is responsible for the sexy Sapphic Greek mythology-inspired mafia thriller We Are the Match (along with a number of other YA and Adult titles), so I know she can land the queer chemistry with aplomb.

Jana Goes Wild

Jana Goes Wild by Farah Heron is $2.99! This is Heron’s latest and was recommended on Hide Your Wallet. I remember Sarah being curious about the setting. Have any of you read this one?

The highly acclaimed author of Accidentally Engaged delivers a delightful rom-com of one woman trying to shed her perfect image at a destination wedding with hilarious — and moving — results, perfect for fans of Abby Jimenez and Jasmine Guillory .

Jana Suleiman has never really fit in—everyone always sees her as too aloof, too cool, too perfect. The one time she stepped out of her comfort zone she ended up with a broken heart and a baby on the way. Aaaand lesson learned . Now she’s a bridesmaid for a destination wedding in Serengeti National Park, and almost everyone she knows will be there. Her five-year-old daughter. Her mom. Her friends. Fortunately, Anil Malek is a great dad, even if Jana hasn’t quite forgiven him for lying to her all those years ago. Determined to show he has no effect on her whatsoever, she and the bridesmaids concoct a go-wild list to get Jana through the week. Sing karaoke? Sure. Perform their high school dance routine in front of strangers? Okay. But the more she lets down her guard, the less protection she has against her attraction to Anil. And Jana soon realizes it’s one thing to walk on the wild side . . . and quite another to fall for her ex all over again.

For Margaret and Hattie the choice is simple. With their small makeshift family, the gang pulls off a series of heists across the West.

Though the newspapers refuse to give the female gang credit, their exploits don’t go unnoticed. Pinkertons are on their trail, a rival male gang is determined to destroy them, and secrets among the group threaten to tear them apart. Forever My Duke

Forever My Duke by Olivia Drake is $1.99! This is part of the Unlikely Duchesses series, and one of my favorite tropes in historical romance is the brash American heiress. I mentioned this in a previous Hide Your Wallet because the description promised a lot of banter. Did you read it?

“I find Miss Fanshawe to be quite charming—for an American.”—The Prince Regent

Hadrian Ames, the Duke of Clayton, needs a bride. He even has the perfect one picked out. That is, until he meets the lovely, free-spirited Natalie Fanshawe. She’s the opposite of what a man of his high rank should desire in a wife—an outspoken American who has never even set foot in a London ballroom.

But Natalie doesn’t have time to be swept off her feet by a handsome duke who must be a spoiled scoundrel like every other British lord. And she couldn’t care less about Hadrian’s title. After all, it’s not as if he actually worked to attain his wealth and status. He surely can’t understand what it’s like to be a busy woman, planning to open a school while trying to reunite a six-year-old orphan with his English relatives. Nevertheless, Hadrian launches his campaign to win her heart. Can the utterly delightful American beauty ever find a way to love him…despite his being a duke?

The Duke’s Got Mail

by Samara Parish
April 28, 2026 · Forever
Contemporary RomanceRomance

Yet again, I have picked up a book because of its cover. I feel zero shame for this shallowness on my part. Okay, sometimes it backfires on me, but this time it worked out, kind of. Although I’ve landed on a C- here, depending on your answers to the questions I pose in this review, you might land in DNF territory, or as high as a B. Very much a case of ‘your mileage may vary’ depending on your personal views.

Eleanor is a compositor, the best in the business. She, along with her two friends, puts individual letters in the right order so that ultimately books and newspapers can be printed. Peter (a duke, of course) has invested in a machine that can do the same job at a fraction of the cost that it takes to employ a large team of compositors. He has a warehouse full of the machines and prepares to sell them to publishers and newspapers in London.

When Eleanor and Peter first meet by chance at the zoo, Peter hides that he is a duke. He implies that he’s a civil servant. There is some lovely chemistry, but that chemistry is a ticking time bomb because it’s only a matter of time until Eleanor realises he’s a duke. They meet again at a few society events because Eleanor (as part of a publishing deal) is serving as an author’s (Lady Wharton’s) companion. When Eleanor realises that he’s a duke, she’s hurt. When she realises that he is the duke that is about to put an entire group of people out of work, she is incensed.

While this is happening, Eleanor’s anonymous pen pal (Peter’s sister) has had surgery on her eyes and so Peter (known as ‘the captain’ to Eleanor) reads his sister her mail and includes notes of his own to Eleanor (aka Booklover). They strike up a deep and sincere friendship.

Do you see the potential for mess here?

There are three questions that any prospective reader needs to ask themselves when deciding if this book is for them.

First: ‘Can I forgive Peter for his multiple lies?’ If you can (and I did, with some difficulty) then it’s possible to enjoy this book.

I’m going to hide why I had difficulty behind a spoiler because it happens late in the book.

Show Spoiler

Despite figuring out that ‘booklover’ and ‘Eleanor’ are the same person at about the midway point of the story, Peter only reveals that he is the ‘captain’ at the very very end of the book. If this had happened to me personally, I would be enraged. Eleanor maintains that he did the right thing keeping it a secret, but I couldn’t get on board with that decision. This was one of the factors that lowered my overall opinion because the feeling I was left with when I finished reading was, ‘not cool, bro’.

BUT most of what came before the end was genuinely interesting to me for a variety of reasons. I enjoyed Eleanor, and I wanted to spend more time with her.

Second: ‘How important is prompt, fair, and just treatment of the working class?’

When there is sudden mass unemployment and people are demonstrating, Peter takes no responsibility and repeatedly says that it is their responsibility to retrain. Eleanor loses her shit with him (quite rightly) and for a time they are bitter enemies. Why on earth did I keep reading at this point? Because I was sure that he would listen to Eleanor and actually use his privilege for something good. I clung to that hope desperately. But did he?

Show Spoiler

It takes Peter ages (80% of the book) to use his influence to get the newly unemployed decent severance packages and opportunities to retrain. He saw how deeply his invention impacted innocent people and he took way too long to act. That I struggled with a lot.

Third: ‘Could you see your way to falling in love with the person that rendered you not only unemployed but unemployable, with your entire career over, as the field no longer exists?’

Peter tries to restart his friendship with Eleanor after she loses her job. Eleanor is allegedly gracious in defeat, according to her, and so they become, in their words, ‘friendly’.

But I struggled to get on board with this. I’ve been let go once and I still hold a huge amount of anger for the circumstances of me losing that job as it was unjust and hurtful. Losing a job and a livelihood are traumatic experiences. I would never, not once in a million years, be friends with the person who ended my career, nevermind fall in love with them. But perhaps that’s a me thing. I’m not proud to admit that I had to push down my moral outrage to get to the end of the book.

Despite my frustrations, I still devoured this book in a couple days because it is an original premise with interesting characters. If you can answer all three of the questions I put forward in the affirmative, then you’ll enjoy The Duke’s Got Mail. I wasn’t able to answer all the questions in the affirmative and I still landed on a C- for this book which to me means a book that is readable and pleasant but not going to set my world on fire or keep me up past a sensible bedtime. It may have been that I was so looking forward to their HEA that I just closed my eyes to the clear obstacles to it. That is, in part, due to the writing, which I found engaging; due to Eleanor, who I enjoyed for the most part, and due to my own headspace where I NEEDED a HEA. For some of the Bitchery, I think this book might enrage them and cause them to flip tables. For others in the Bitchery, perhaps in a similar position to me, they’ll find it a pleasant way to pass the time.

Burn Zone

Burn Zone by Annabeth Albert is $1.99! This is book one in the Hotshots series, which features firefighter and smoke jumper heroes. I know we have a few Albert fans in the Bitchery. Have you read this one?

Introducing Annabeth Albert’s Hotshots series—the emotions and intensity of Chicago Fire with the raw, natural elements of Man vs. Wild.

Danger lurks everywhere for Central Oregon’s fire crews, but the biggest risk of all might be losing their hearts…

Smoke jumper Lincoln Reid is speechless to see Jacob Hartman among his squad’s new recruits. Linc had promised his late best friend he’d stay away from his little brother. And yet here Jacob is…and almost instantly, the same temptation Linc has always felt around him is causing way too many problems.

Jacob gets everyone’s concerns, but he’s waited years for his shot at joining the elite smoke jumping team, hoping to honor his brother’s memory. He’s ready to tackle any challenge Linc throws his way, and senses the chemistry between them—chemistry Linc insists on ignoring—is still alive and kicking. This time, Jacob’s determined to get what he wants.

Close quarters and high stakes make it difficult for Linc to keep his resolve, never mind do so while also making sure the rookie’s safe. But the closer they get, the more Linc’s plan to leave at the end of the season risks him breaking another promise: the one his heart wants to make to Jacob.

This book is approximately 90,000 words

The Kingdom

The Kingdom by Jess Rothenberg is $2.99! My friend, who exclusively reads YA and had 600+ titles in our former apartment, really enjoyed this one. I trust her opinion implicitly. She says it’s unsettling in the best way and is Westworld meet Disney princesses.

Welcome to the Kingdom… where ‘Happily Ever After’ isn’t just a promise, but a rule.

Glimmering like a jewel behind its gateway, The Kingdom™ is an immersive fantasy theme park where guests soar on virtual dragons, castles loom like giants, and bioengineered species—formerly extinct—roam free.

Ana is one of seven Fantasists, beautiful “princesses” engineered to make dreams come true. When she meets park employee Owen, Ana begins to experience emotions beyond her programming including, for the first time… love.

But the fairytale becomes a nightmare when Ana is accused of murdering Owen, igniting the trial of the century. Through courtroom testimony, interviews, and Ana’s memories of Owen, emerges a tale of love, lies, and cruelty—and what it truly means to be human.

Big Name Fan

Big Name Fan by Ruthie Knox and Annie Mare is $3.99! This also had a mention in Dahlia’s monthly queer roundup posts. The main characters used to play detectives on a TV show and come back together to do a reunion special.

Bexley Simon and Sam Farmer aren’t detectives, but they play them on TV. Well, played, past tense. The iconic cult hit that was Craven’s Daughter ended five years ago, and their friendship died along with it. Fans were disappointed that the pair’s legendary chemistry went unfulfilled—and other fans were crushed that the actual spark between actresses Bex and Sam didn’t pay off, either. The network never intended for two women to get romantic, in life or onscreen, despite the fans. But the bigger tragedy was the loss of their dear friend, makeup artist Jen Arnot, whose accidental death cast a pall over the series’ last episodes.

Now the network has decided on a reunion special, and Bex and Sam are thrust together once more as hosts of a rewatch podcast that will feature favorite episodes. Their first guest—a megawatt star who played a murder victim early on—drops a bombshell. Among the millions of pixels of fanfic written about the show online, one truly prolific author, known in the fiction world as the show’s Big Name Fan, was an insider, almost certainly someone from the cast or crew.

As the podcast moves along—and the spark between Bex and Sam threatens to burn down the studio—the pair realize they’re faced with two actual Who is their Big Name Fan? And was Jen’s death an accident, or did someone want her dead? Sifting through clues as they question cast and crew, the duo will need to separate fact from fiction as they make their personal partnership into an unmistakable canon . . .

An illustrated image of a desk space with a computer, stack of books, reading glasses, and a mug.Welcome back!

It’s the last Wednesday of April. I can hardly believe it. Does any else feel like it fly by? And my May is shaping up to be busy busy busy.

How is your spring looking? Is it packed with social obligations or more of a calm before the summer storm?

Remember a couple months ago when I mentioned interviewing KJ Charles? Well now that interview is out!

For all my gaming friends, I discovered the Any Austin channel. He does a deep dive into a lot of the world building and environments, like tracking all the power lines in Red Dead Redemption 2. His videos make for great, chill background noise.

If the state of book news feels dreadful right now, here are some positive headlines from the book world.

Please enjoy this soothing conversation of nuns discussing ultimate frisbee. I mean this in the most complimentary way, but their voices remind me of the Delicious Dish sketch on SNL.

The Love of My Afterlife

The Love of My Afterlife by Kirsty Greenwood is $1.99! I hope this sale lasts! Sarah had the author on the podcast and she picked it as her favorite read of 2024.

A recently deceased woman meets “the one” in the afterlife waiting room, scoring a second chance at life (and love!) if she can find him on earth before ten days are up…

If she wasn’t dead already, Delphie would be dying of embarrassment. Not only did she just die by choking on a microwaveable burger, but now she’s standing in her ‘shine like a star’ nightie in front of the hottest man she’s ever seen. And he’s smiling at her.

As they start to chat, everything else becomes background noise. That is until someone comes running out of a door, yelling something about a huge mistake, and sends the dreamy stranger back down to earth. And here Delphie was thinking her luck might be different in the afterlife.

When Delphie is offered a deal in which she can return to earth and reconnect with the mysterious man, she jumps at the opportunity to find her possible soulmate and a fresh start. But in a city of millions, Delphie is going to have to listen to her heart, learn to ask for help, and perhaps even see the magic in the life she’s leaving behind…

Fear the Flames

Fear the Flames by Olivia Rose Darling is $2.99! I believe this had lots of hype on social media when it came out. It’s book one in a series.

An exiled princess teams up with the last man she thought she could trust in the start of a dazzling and unforgettable epic fantasy romance series.

As a child, Elowen Atarah was ripped away from her dragons and imprisoned by her father, King Garrick of Imirath. Years later, Elowen is now a woman determined to free her dragons. Having established a secret kingdom of her own called Aestilian, she’s ready to do what’s necessary to save her people and seek vengeance. Even if that means having to align herself with the Commander of Vareveth, Cayden Veles, the most feared and dangerous man in all the kingdoms of Ravaryn.

Cayden is ruthless, lethal, and secretive, promising to help Elowen if she will stand with him and all of Vareveth in the pending war against Imirath. Despite their contrasting motives, Elowen can’t ignore their undeniable attraction as they combine their efforts and plot to infiltrate the impenetrable castle of Imirath to steal back her dragons and seek revenge on their common enemy.

As the world tries to keep them apart, the pull between Elowen and Cayden becomes impossible to resist. Working together with their crew over clandestine schemes, the threat of war looms, making the imminent heist to free her dragons their most dangerous adventure yet. But for Elowen, her vengeance is a promise signed in blood, and she’ll stop at nothing to see that promise through.

An immersive fantasy filled with a sizzling reluctant-allies-to-lovers romance, a world to get lost in, dangerous quests, dragon bonds, and an entertaining band of characters to root for, Fear the Flames marks the stunning debut of Olivia Rose Darling.

Someone to Love

Someone to Love by Mary Balogh is $1.99! This is the first book in the Westcott series. Carrie gave this a D+, which seems like a rare miss. Do you agree with the grade?

This HaBO is from Miglena, who wants to find this romance:

Hi all, I’ve tried everything and can’t seem to find this book that I read about three years ago.

It’s a contemporary romance, set in NYC, high steam and some kinks involved, decently written and on the lengthier side.

The hero is filthy rich and in his 30s; heroine is 18/19 but acts rather mature for her age. She is working in his office on a temporary cleaning gig but is actually wealthy herself, does it to spite her family and/or because she needed the cash without their knowledge. Couple start sleeping together right away and she doesn’t go back to work. I vaguely remember the heroine being inexperienced and the hero almost not wanting to go through with it, thinking she’s a virgin. Last chapter we find out that heroine is pregnant. Because of that, the hero doesn’t want to be as crazy with their kinks anymore although she wants it rough. They invite her tell her/or his family (a brother or a grandmother?) that they’re getting married. Epilogue chapter we learn that they’ve had a few kids (maybe 3?) and are sitting at a beach (maybe Hamptons, maybe all was set in NY), either 8 or 10 years down the line. That’s all I remember. Thanks!

It is noy Buy Me, Sir by Jade West.

Nothing related to mafia, no daddy kinks, hero isn’t connected to heroine through his best friend, relative, etc. and they meet for the very first time and start their arrangement.

Ring any bells?

Perfect for fans of The Atlas Six and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue.

When Claudia Jolicoeur is rejected from Cygnus University, a devilish stranger named Dorian appears in her nightmares and offers her a bargain: he will get her into Cygnus if she learns how to free him from a prison of stars. He takes a bite of her soul to seal the deal, and Claudia wakes to a letter from the High Sage of Cygnus stating she will take the place of Odette Dufort, a Rhetoric student who passed away.

Her arrival raises suspicions, rumors that she had a hand in Odette’s death spread like wildfire, and Cassius MacLeod, the High Sage’s apprentice and Claudia’s fellow Rhetoric student, seems hellbent on humiliating her. Determined to clear her name, she searches for any evidence that could prove her innocence. When someone—or something—starts slipping her pieces of Odette’s diary, Claudia uncovers a horrifying truth: over the last century, celestial witches at Cygnus have been murdered. Odette was one of them, and Claudia could be next. For her own protection, Claudia needs to free Dorian—and fast.

By night, she studies the stars, slowly unraveling the mystery of Dorian’s prison. By day, she and Cassius wage rhetorical war as debate partners in class. What begins as a fierce rivalry devolves into something deeper, darker, and dangerously sensual. The Duke

The Duke by Anna Cowan

Author: Anna Cowan
Released: April 28, 2026 by St. Martin's Griffin
Genre: , ,

“Gorgeously written and desperately hot… Hands down, my favorite romance of the decade.” — Alix E. Harrow, New York Times bestselling author of Starling House

A sapphic regency romance about the duke who fears nothing… until the woman she never forgot walks through the door and brings her to her knees.

Set in a world of powerful female nobles and the women who love them…

Kate, Duke of Howard, is known throughout Europe as a merciless autocrat not to be crossed. Consumed by a bitter rivalry, she avoids society and has vowed never to trap a woman into marriage with a monster like herself.

The beautiful, ambitious courtesan Celine Genet once threw herself on the mercy of the visiting Duke of Howard. She was desperate to escape the guillotine. But after a night of searing passion, the duke left her to the ravages of Revolutionary Paris and didn’t look back. Now Celine is in London and in possession of a dangerous letter that proves the Duke of Howard committed treason as a child – and possibly even murder.

Celine wants a titled husband in return for keeping the duke’s secret, leaving Kate no choice but to parade her around the most fashionable ballrooms. But as Celine takes society by storm, Kate finds herself growing fond of the woman set on destroying her. And as their attraction mounts, Kate faces an impossible choice: keep her childhood secret, or win the woman she loves.

Anna Cowan’s The Duke is an utterly unforgettable, page-turning romance featuring two women who, separately, are a danger to each other, but together, could be the most powerful duo London has ever seen.

An interesting setup for a queer historical romance.

Released: April 28, 2026 by Alcove Press
Genre: , , ,
Series: Rogue Devotions #1

On the hunt for hidden treasure, two former best friends turned adversaries must put the past behind them if they hope to make it home.

This enemies-to-lovers male/male romantic fantasy in the tradition of Tusk Love and Sara Raasch crackles with tension and heat.

When he isn’t training as a Warden to become half the hero his father was, Griff Sayer is in the business of breaking hearts all across the town of Mayfair, although that slows down after settling in with his current boyfriend. Griff’s ex-best-friend, Mal Pryce, meanwhile, is in business with whatever or whoever puts good money in his hands. Now in their mid-20s, Griff and Mal have only exchanged scathing looks and carefully barbed jabs since the fight that sent them their separate ways years ago. But all that begins to change when an attack Mal plotted for his shady boss leaves Griff near death and their childhood friend Alys is his savior, forcing them back into each other’s orbit.

Livid at his boss, Mal makes a deal to earn his freedom and Griff’s safety. He has just four weeks to retrieve an ancient treasure from Rotrose Mire, a remote swamp known for its ghostly and beastly dangers, the same treasure Alys’s beloved father Rhun had been searching for when he disappeared for good. Armed with a map and a broken blade of Rhun’s, Mal sets off—with Alys and a reluctant and newly single Griff in tow.

Yet the explosive tension between the two men—along with the dangers of the mire pressing in around them—make for a more difficult journey than any of them could have anticipated. As Griff and Mal peel back their tough facades, and shared feelings heat up in unexpected ways as they learn to trust again, they also realize that someone—or something—seems to be following their path. Someone who doesn’t want them to succeed, no friend to their parents’ old enemies, but also no friend to would-be heroes…

Our Rogue Fates is a second-chance spicy Achillean romance with the questing spirit of Dungeons & Dragons, perfect for fans of Critical Role.

Project V

Project V by Seolyeon Park

Author: Seolyeon Park
Released: April 28, 2026
Genre:

STEMinist mecha fantasy meets reality television in this high-stakes novel from the author of A Magical Girl Retires—a wildly imaginative tale of sibling bonds, unexpected friendship, and an existential quest to understand what it means to be human.

Robotics student Kim Wooram, runner-up at the World Gigantic Mechanics Olympiad, is a world-class pilot and engineer. Unlike many of her contemporaries, she likes working solo, preferring the company of robots to most other humans. Sought by robotics centers across the globe, she chooses to return to Korea after learning of an exciting new secret government robotic project known as V. To her disappointment, only male pilots are allowed to apply.

Desperate for a chance to make history and encouraged by her twin brother, Boram, the usual rule-following Wooram makes a risky choice. Posing as Boram, she auditions for Project V, the reality competition show whose winner will pilot the robot V—and quickly becomes one of the top contestants in both skill and popularity. Wooram attracts fans and friends like Seojin, the show’s youngest female writer and ardent “Boram” stan, and Jeonghoon, the clumsy but lovable underdog. She also gains a rival in Jinyoung, the ruthless heir to a Korean corporate dynasty.

As Wooram comes tantalizingly close to achieving her goal, she begins to realize that V’s arrogant AI is a ticking time bomb. With victory within reach, and her identity at stake, will Wooram destroy the robot of her dreams to save lives, or stick to the script?

Project V is a playful yet sharp meditation on some of the most pressing issues roiling modern society in Korea and across the the male dominance in STEM fields, the ethics of parasocial idolatry and our addiction to social media and reality television, and the promise and peril of an AI-oriented future. Punchy and compelling, Park Seolyeon’s novel is a winning exploration of ambition and creation—a quintessential novel of our present and future for mecha fans and all curious readers.

I Believe in a Thing Called Love

I Believe in a Thing Called Love by Maurene Goo is $2.99! This is a contemporary YA romance with a heroine who turns to K-dramas to give her tips for love. Readers found this to be super cute, but some reviews mentioned not being on board for the heroine’s romance tactics.

Desi Lee knows how carburetors work. She learned CPR at the age of five. As a high school senior, she has never missed a day of school and has never had a B in her entire life. She’s for sure going to Stanford. But—she’s never had a boyfriend. In fact, she’s a disaster in romance, a clumsy, stammering humiliation-magnet whose botched attempts at flirting have become legendary with her friends. So when the hottest human specimen to have ever lived walks into her life one day, Desi decides to tackle her flirting failures with the same zest she’s applied to everything else in her life. She finds her answer in the Korean dramas her father has been obsessively watching for years—where the hapless heroine always seems to end up in the arms of her true love by episode ten. It’s a simple formula, and Desi is a quick study. Armed with her “K Drama Rules for True Love,” Desi goes after the moody, elusive artist Luca Drakos—and boat rescues, love triangles, and fake car crashes ensue. But when the fun and games turn to true feels, Desi finds out that real love is about way more than just drama.

Tempting Olivia

Tempting Olivia by Clare Ashton is $3.49! This is book two in the f/f contemporary Oxford Romance series. Many of Ashton’s books have been mentioned and recommended on the site.

Olivia Sachdeva’s life is flawless. With a first from Oxford and as the youngest partner at Bentley lawyers, she expects high standards from everyone. Her only indulgences are eating iced desserts and repeat watching romcoms, especially those featuring Kate Laurence – pure escapism and cinematic perfection.

But, when the actor walks into Olivia’s office with a bag full of divorce and a messy personal life, that perfect bubble bursts. Kate seems nothing like the screen goddesses she plays, and Olivia must put aside her comfort viewing and handle the case like the true professional she is.

It requires secrecy, especially with indiscreet friends. Will best-friend Charlotte ever read the room? And will Millie, who instantly reads the room, ever stop commenting loudly?

And Kate? She doesn’t know what to think about this frosty lawyer. But she needs a quick divorce from a mistake of a marriage, which was over before it started, and Olivia Sachdeva is the best.

But little by little, Olivia and Kate glimpse behind the mask, to find someone they weren’t looking for, who may not even be perfect, but might be the right person for them.

Read as a stand-alone romance or book two of the Oxford Romance series.

The Bone Raiders

The Bone Raiders by Jackson Ford is $1.99! This released late last year and I remember thinking it sounded pretty fun. Book two in the series is out next month.

The start of an edge-of-your-seat, action‑packed epic fantasy series from the irreverent Jackson Ford, where a wild band known as the Bone Raiders harness the power of gigantic, fire-breathing lizards to defend their homeland.

“Awesome. Masterfully executed. Frequently hilarious.” — Nicholas Eames, author of Kings of the Wyld

WE DIDN’T START THE FIRE . . . BUT OUR GIANT FIRE-BREATHING LIZARDS DID.

You don’t f*ck with the Rakada. The people living in the grasslands of the Tapestry call them the Bone Raiders, from their charming habit of displaying the bones of those they kill on their armour. But being a raider is tough these days. There’s a new Great Khan in the Tapestry. He plans to use his sizeable military to get rid of the raider clans. And then there are the huge fire-breathing lizards that are straying into the grasslands a little too often these days.

Sayana is a raider scout. She knows that to protect their way of life, she needs do something drastic. Like convincing her clan to ride those huge lizards, instead of horses. Sayana doesn’t know how to do it without being eaten and/or cooked alive, but she’d better figure it out fast – or she and her clan, along with every other raider in the Tapestry, will be wiped out.

How to Fake It in Society

by KJ Charles
April 28, 2026 · Bramble
Historical: EuropeanRomance

This book brought me a tremendous amount of pleasure. It’s a KJ Charles book, so that’s probably stating the obvious, but this is KJ Charles at her best.

Nico is a French aristocrat with a painting to sell in order to pay off a terrifying moneylender on behalf of his cousin Evelyn (usually referred to as Eve). Nico is engaged to Miss Whitecross, a phenomenally wealthy old woman. He is not old – probably in his twenties, although it’s never stated. While he is out of town, Miss Whitecross’s (evil) nephew trips her going down the stairs and she is now on her deathbed.

Titus makes watercolours and oilpaints professionally. Miss Whitecross is one of his clients and he arrives on Miss Whitecross’s doorstep with her paint order. The butler, Mr Thorpe, sees an opportunity for Miss Whitecross to have her vengeance afterall. Long story short, Titus ends up marrying Miss Whitecross there and then so that her evil nephew doesn’t inherit her fortune – it all goes to Titus.

In a matter of hours, Titus goes from being a shopkeeper with an eviction notice hanging over his head to being fabulously wealthy. Nico returns to town in the days that follow and pays Titus a visit, initially planning to get some money out of Titus as compensation for losing out on a fortune, but he soon becomes Titus’s guide and protector.

One of my predominant thoughts when reading was that the narrator really loved her characters (It’s a third person narrator). This made it so easy to fall in love with the characters myself. I have an extended excerpt from Titus’ wedding to Miss Whitecross that made me squeal with delight.

“Titus planted a very awkward, exceedingly light kiss on her papery hand, rather than her torn and bruised cheek.

“Flatterer”, she said, in a thread of a voice but still with a gleam of satisfaction. “He has it all now, don’t he, Carnaby?”

“The Whitecross fortune passes absolutely to your husband in accordance with the provisions of your father’s bequest.”

“And my property too. Where’s the will? Read it.”

Mr Carnaby produced a document. “Mr Green, if you will confirm for me that I am giving a faithful reading.”

He waited for the Reverend Mr Green to stand by him, then read out the provisions. A generous sum to Thomas Thorpe, her faithful butler, and as much again to her housekeeper, Mrs Matilda Thorpe. Multiple small bequests to her other servants, and everything else of which she died possessed to –

“Titus Caesar Pilcrow? Caesar?” she croaked.

“My father was greatly interested in Roman imperial history”

“Imbecile. Go on, Carnaby.”

The rest of which she died possessed was bequeathed absolutely to her lawful husband, Titus Caesar Pilcrow, with the exception of one pound to Matthew Laxton, her sister’s son, in recognition of all the love Miss Whitecross bore him.

“In those words,” she said querulously, “And why must I leave him anything?”

“Only so he can’t claim he was forgotten,” Mr Carnaby said in soothing tones. “Are these your wishes Mrs Pilcrow?”

“Mrs – ha. Seventy-eight years without a dratted man in my life and now this tomfoolery. Yes, that’s my wish. Everyone hear me? Pilcrow has it all.”

The reverend, the curate, the lawyer, the doctor and the butler all nodded.

I adored Miss Whitecross. I cared for Titus. And this is all in the opening pages. Imagine how much more love there is to be felt for these characters! And I felt it all!

Titus proves himself to be a respectful, reserved man with a passion for art (and Nico). Nico, as I mentioned, becomes Titus’s protector and support, genuinely. Titus is bewildered by the acquaintances and strangers now asking him for money, either as a gift or a loan. He’s overwhelmed by the Society mothers who now see him as a fitting suitor for their daughters. He has no knowledge of Society rules and expectations. He doesn’t know what to wear or how to behave. Nico helps him with all of this.

For all that it is clear that Nico is up to no good from the start, his care and consideration for Titus are genuine. He guides and encourages and supports as Titus works out for himself what exactly it is that he wants to do now that he is wealthy. There is something unutterably tender about the growing connection between the two. Titus is learning to shed baggage from a previous (emotionally abusive) relationship and stand up for what he wants. Nico is his patient, caring, supportive guide in this new world he finds himself in. Nico himself is starting to dream that maybe things can be different for him too, that a genuine partnership is possible. Maybe he doesn’t need to live “on a combination of his wits and the skin of his teeth” always in service of his next goal. Although there are some very big hurdles that need to be cleared first.

It’s clear from the start what the bleak moment will be. It’s so clear that even Titus knows it. Nico needs money and Titus has it. I won’t spell the details out here as things unfold in a way I did not predict even if the crux of the conflict was written on the wall.

The historical detail is fantastically compelling. A particular favourite of mine was the way that money was put in perspective. There are multiple references throughout to how much money would be required to do certain things. For example, I learnt that an aristocratic household at the time would need £2000 to run for a year. Titus inherits capital that gives him an income of £8000 a year. FABULOUSLY wealthy!

In terms of representation, Evelyn’s gender remains ambiguous for much of the book. If I understand correctly, Evelyn is AFAB but living as a man mostly. When Titus brings it up at the end…

Show Spoiler

Nico says, “Eve is best understood to be simply Eve … ‘He’ suffices where necessary.”

I had only one tiny disappointment: for me the HEA didn’t feel long enough. I would have liked a glimpse into the future, showing how this found family made a home together. Otherwise, yes, I’m saying it with my full chest, it is nearly a perfect book. I think KJ Charles fans will be as delighted as I was.

Welcome back to Cover Snark!

Sutton's Spinster by Scarlett Scott. A woman in a giant blue dress is plopped down with a man lounging behind her, kissing her neck. Her blush is...noticeable.

Elyse: The artist was sick the day the learned to draw the lower body.

Sneezy: Never skip leg day.

Amanda: Her dress reminds me of those Barbie dress cakes.

Sarah: That is just So Much Dress.

Also, are his trousers open in the front?! My word!

The Alien Farmer Needs a Wife by Ava Blaire. A shirtless man stares at us while an intense lightning storm happens in the background. He is very orange and shiny, like his whole body is dusted in makeup highlighter. He also looks like actor Christopher Meloni.,

From Syntha: I don’t even know where to start with this one.

Sarah: He looks like someone. Who does he look like. It’s going to bug me until I figure it out.

Elyse: It’s orange Detective Stabler.

Sarah: YES I THINK YOU ARE RIGHT.

Elyse: Doink Doink!

Beware the Neckromancer by Lilo Quie. A figure in a suit in front of a highly saturated rainbow watercolor background. Instead of a head, it's just a long giraffe neck that disappears off the cover.

Sarah: Syntha also sent this and I have to say, I respect the attempt:

Syntha: The giraffe neck just looks so silly rising out of the jacket.

Amanda: Honestly, this one is perfect.

No notes.

Elyse: His center of gravity is just so fucked up.

Can you imagine the orthopedic issues that guy has?

Sarah: I really can’t fault any of it.

Aleron by Macy Blake. A shirtless man with floppy dark hair and scruff is smiling at us. He's holding a silver necklace in his teeth. The background is a full moon in a red sky.

Sarah: This was a suggestion while I was looking at the Neckromancer (I see what was done there) and in icon size it looks like he is drooling.

Amanda: You can just tell this man has an overinflated ego.

Sarah: He is his own Chosen Champion, huh? Yeah, I see it.

Hello and welcome back!

In this edition, we have two very different mystery options. There’s also some cozy fantasy and non-fiction.

Have any book recommendations you’d like to pass along? Drop them in the comments!

The Gardeners’ Club

This certainly feels like Thursday Murder Club, but with a gardening club instead. It has an ensemble cast and is a standalone (for now!).

Gardening is dirty work—but should it be deadly? When a corpse turns up in the community greenhouse, Gill Swanley discovers her new hobby might be more dangerous than she imagined.

When Gill Swanley decides to take up gardening to fight a bad case of midlife malaise, she never expected it to become quite such a dangerous hobby.

Pushing herself to “get out there,” Gill picks herself up the secateurs and joins the Bromley Botanists. Here she finds a seven-strong group whose main agenda is how to win the coveted Golden Trowel for best community club of the year.

But when a dead body turns up in the community greenhouse, they suddenly have more serious matters to consider than victory. They must uncover whether their arch-rivals, Croydon, are taking things to another level or whether someone more dangerous is targeting their rag tag group.

Can they dig up the truth before someone else is left pushing up the daisies?

The Halfling’s Harvest

I saw this on a list of books for Stardew Valley fans. It’s a cozy fantasy and, while I love Stardew Valley and have sunk hundreds of hours into the game, I also know cozy fantasies aren’t quite for me. But they might be for you!

When pumpkins glow and cider flows, behold the harvest’s magic.

For most halflings, the annual harvest festival is a time to revel in life’s simple pleasures—hearty feasts, flowing wine, and warm hospitality. But for Marigold Bramblefoot, owner of the Dew Drop Inn and Vineyard, it’s the busiest—and most stressful—time of the year.

Juggling an inn full of quirky guests, preparing for the bustling festivities, and managing her vineyard would be enough to overwhelm anyone. But Marigold has her sights set on something bigger: winning first place in the annual wine competition and finally stepping out of her father’s shadow.

The only problem? Her rival, Darkroot Cellars, has dominated the competition for a decade thanks to the druidic magic behind their wines.

With her hands full and her heart set on success, Marigold must balance the chaos of the festival, a budding romance, and unraveling the vineyard’s hidden mysteries, all while discovering what it truly means to craft her own legacy. Because in Willowbrook, the harvest festival is more than a celebration—it’s a season for transformation, and Marigold’s is long overdue.

About the Welcome to the enchanting world of Tales of Aedrea, where small-scale stories, low-stakes adventure, and cozy fantasy come to life within an epic, high-fantasy realm.

The Iron Garden Sutra

I love scifi horror/mystery so much. It also doesn’t hurt that the marketing copy references two of my favorite scifi titles with “S. A. Barnes’s Dead Silence with a touch of Becky Chambers’ A Psalm for the Wild-Built.”

Klara and the Sun meets S. A. Barnes’s Dead Silence with a touch of Becky Chambers’ A Psalm for the Wild-Built in Nebula Award-winning author A.D. Sui’s darkly philosophical murder mystery, as a death monk and a team of researchers trapped onboard a spaceship of the dead encounter something beyond human understanding…

Vessel Iris has devoted himself to the Starlit Order, performing funeral rites for the dead across the galaxy, guiding souls back into the Infinite Light. Despite the comfort he wants to believe he brings to the dead, his relationships with his fellow Vessels are distant at best, leaving him reliant on his AI implant for companionship.

The spaceship Counsel of Nicaea has been lost for more than a thousand years. A relic of Earth’s dying past, humanity took the ship to the stars on a multi-generation journey to find another habitable planet yet never reached its destination. Its sudden appearance has attracted a team of academics eager to investigate its archeological history. And Iris has been assigned to bring peace to the crew’s long departed souls.

Carpeted in moss and intertwined with vines, Nicaea is more forest than ship. Skeletons are all that remain of the crew, and Iris’ religious rituals are met with bemusement by the scientists—and outright hostility by the engineer Yan Fukui. Determined to be more than just the curator of the dead, Iris tries to make himself useful to the team, desperate to form friendships.

But Nicaea’s plant life isn’t the only sentience to have survived in the past millennia. Something onboard is stalking the explorers one by one. And Iris with his AI enhancement may be their only hope for survival. . .

You’re So Strong

This is the only non-fiction title in the bunch and deals with grief, young widowhood, and suddenly becoming a single parent. She also has a great instagram account where she talks to and seeks advice from other widows.

“Vulnerable and slyly funny.”–Publishers Weekly

“You’re doing so well,” they tell you. “You’re so strong.”

Meanwhile, you’re standing in the middle of your living room, staring at a mountain of grown-man Legos, wondering if it’s disrespectful to donate them or insane to keep them.

You’re on hold with AT&T for the third time this week, trying to explain to a stranger that the account holder doesn’t need unlimited data anymore because he’s dead. You are holding it together on the outside, but on the inside, you are navigating a map that no one gave you, for a terrain you never wanted to visit.

Leslie Harter-Berg knows too well the absurdity of the “admin of death”–the paperwork, the passwords, the phone calls that punctuate the grief. She knows what it’s like to have a life that was “pretty darn good” implode into a reality of solo parenting and widowhood at the age of thirty. She knows exactly what it feels like to have to do school drop-off when simply getting out of bed seems insurmountable.

In this relatable, poignant, and funny memoir-meets-grief-guide, Leslie shares her many attempts at conquering the stages of grief and her ultimate acceptance that no one is actually grading her in Coping 101. In this deeply honest account of life after loss, Leslie learns the hard way that surviving is often more profound and beautiful than thriving.

If you’re exhausted by the well-meaning but empty promises that this is a “blessing in disguise,” that “now you have a guardian angel” or “everything happens for a reason,” come sit next to Leslie as she discovers that there’s not a magic prayer for moving on, and that it’s time to lay down the mantle of “doing grief right.”

Cozy seat in beautiful backyard flower gardenWelcome back! Here’s what we’re reading right now:

Carrie: I just finished the Trembling Hand, ( A | BN | K | AB ) a nonfiction that I read slowly, and am starting The Chamber, ( A | BN | K | AB ) a thriller which I hope to speed through since it’s all plot

Lara: I just started a cosy mystery by an author that (from what I can tell) started as an influencer. The Potting Shed Murder by Paula Sutton. ( A | BN | K | AB ) I’m only a couple pages in but I’m intrigued!

The Fey Hotel
A | BN
Amanda: I started The Fey Hotel, but my brain is all over the place and was having some issues latching onto the world building. I was not aware it took place in a fantasy Seattle based on the cover.

Sarah: I finished Fair Game by Patricia Briggs, ( A | BN | K | AB ) part of the Alpha & Omega series, and am debating whether to move to the next book or take a break. I love the relationship development and the exploration of ethics, justice, and acceptance, but woo damn are they violent AF. I mean, for me. There are probably more violent books out there.

Key Lime Sky
A | BN | K | AB
Elyse: I just finished the entire ACOTAR series ( A | BN | K | G | AB ) and went from my cynical self to a die hard fan. I took off 10/27. There is something addicting in those pages…

Shana: I just started Key Lime Sky by Al Hess. So far there’s pie, queers, and alien invasions.

Susan: I’m reading Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, ( A | BN ) which is very dramatic and somehow is not m/m romance, despite reading exactly like Global Examination.

Whatcha reading? Let us know in the comments!
